Catedral de San Juan

Puerto Rico has always been popular for its adorable beaches, great golf courses, and beautiful historical buildings. There is great variety of activities in that country that will make your vacation a fun experience. If you are looking for something more than a pleasant spa vacation in one of the Puerto Rico hotels, this island can offer you many historical and cultural monuments such as the Cathedral of San Juan de Bautista.

San Juan Cathedral was constructed by Alonso Manso in 1521 who was a bishop in the city. So it is one of the oldest buildings in San Juan. At first the Cathedral had wooden walls and a thatch roof but there was a hurricane in October of 1526 that almost destroyed it. The beautiful building you can see today dates back from 1540. In fact its facade was added in the 1800s. During the centuries San Juan Cathedral has become of a great religious importance to locals.

The body of Ponce de Leon, the person who established San Juan, is placed in a marble tomb close to the transept of the church.  San Juan Cathedral is also a home to the remains of St. Pio since 1862. His body was mummified in wax and placed in a glass box. Visiting that lovely place, you will be able to relish many beautifully colored statues and great stained-glass windows.

fYou can explore that adorable structure daily from 8:30am to 4:00pm. That is why when you are booking in one of the hotels in Puerto Rico, choose one in San Juan.
