Wicket Wonders

Murrayfield may be more famous for its rugby, or even ice hockey, but in this sporting epicentre, it seems that cricket may too also be on the radar. Thousands of fans every year check into a Murrayfield hotel to catch a game at the Murrayfield DAFS Cricket Club.

Originally founded in 1909, it was named the London Road Church CC because of the church located nearby. When Reverend John Anderson’s bible class showed real enthusiasm towards the sport, it was decided that they should form a team. The first game was played in 1910 against another church, Central Wesleyians. The club was still associated with the church but opinions on whether cricket was allowed to be played on Sundays began to cut all ties in 1952, to finally just become London Road CC. By the 1950s, the club relocated to Roseburn Park. By the 1960s, the club was at its peak, featuring legends such as Stan Duncan and Eddie Robson. By 1976, the team was unstoppable, having won the Grade ‘A’ League and the Parks Trophy. Things looked positive again in the 1980s and by the end of the decade both a 2nd and 3rd XI had been formed. Again, its name changed in 1992 to Murrayfield CC to create a sense of locality.
In 2001, DAFS CC was finding it hard to survive in the East League and so therefore the two clubs combined to become what it is today. Both the 1st and 2nd XI currently play at the Civil Service Sports Ground in Murrayfield, whilst the 3rd team have stuck to roots by staying at Roseburn Park. Things are looking up for the cricket team which are starting to relive their golden days in the 1960s. When catching a rugby match in the area, be sure to visit the club and learn more about their fascinating history. For a full weekend in the city, book in advance into a luxury hotel Edinburgh, especially in the upcoming summer months. Whether it be cricket, rugby or anything else you go for, Murrayfield is simply a sportsman’s paradise.
