Sightseeing Places in Innsbruck

Innsbruck, located in the heart of the Austrian Alps is often associated with skiing and snowboarding, as well as the traditional Tyrolean folklore. Generally a much desired destination for winter sports or just a romantic honeymoon, this small town is a place of fine architecture too – one can enjoy a walk on the clean pedestrian streets and breathe in a friendly, cultured atmosphere.

After renting a room in a comfortable Innsbruck hotel, you can start with the old town. Among the many richly decorated buildings, the Hofkirche and the Golden roof shine the most. The former is the tallest cathedral and also contains the cenotaph of emperor Maximilian, the ruler who made the small town rise to prominence. The ornate black marble cenotaph is surrounded by bronze statues and is covered with bas-reliefs depicting scenes of His Majesty's life. The Golden Roof is a landmark, a residence with three-story balcony decorated with 2657 fire-gilded copper tiles. It was constructed for Emperor Maximilian I to serve as a royal box where he could sit in state and enjoy tournaments in the square below. The reliefs on the balcony show coats of arms, symbols and other figures in his life.

There are many museums in Innsbruck – the Tyrolean State Museum, the Armoury, Alpine Club Museum and others. Most impressive remains the Ambras castle. Situated in the hills above Innsbruck, the Castle of Ambras is one of the most important sights of the city. In the lower part of the castle there are two rooms containing arms and armor, on the first floor a valuable art collection and in the upper part of the castle, the bathroom of the archduchess. The Spanish hall between the lower and upper part of the castles is a notable example of German Renaissance architecture and is adorned with frescoes on the walls.

Enjoy the services of the finest Innsbruck hotels during your stay in this beautiful and romantic place.
