Big city life means relying on public transportation, living cheek to jowl with your neighbours, and never knowing quiet what actual quiet sounds like. While this can be invigorating and part of the energy living in an urban environment, sometimes a little outdoor time is needed and your inner naturalist needs to be nurtured.
If you’re lucky enough to have booked a few days of rest and relaxation in an Edinburgh Castle hotel, then you plenty of options for getting out of the city just the way you need. While the city itself is an amazing sight to see, getting out of it and seeing some of the natural beauty surrounding just as rewarding. Edinburgh has many walks and hikes within close range of the city centre, and are easily done in an afternoon. Regardless of the time of year, walking has a vast range of beautiful, colours, shades, textures and moods. One excellent option for a walk is to do part of the John Muir Way. Passing through countryside and coastline in East Lothian, the path is named for the Scottish-born American naturalist who was instrumental in preserving California’s beauty in the last century. Another walk that is very easy but also tranquil is anything along the Union Canal. The flattened and peaceful walkway provides reflective and calm waters and greenery on either side. Arthurs Sat and Holyrood Park offer excellent in-city options, but to get out a bit farther afield, try the old railway wlkas that meander through the Lothian country side. Pentcaitland to Ormiston and Penicuik and Roslin are both popular and scenic old railways that are also dotted with interesting natural and manmade features.
There are many amazing places to stay in Edinburgh as well as many amazing places to walk. Anywhere in the city will be a great choice for access to the city and to nature. For instance, the Murrayfield Hotel puts the visitor in excellent proximity to sporting options, but also to the city. If anything is for sure, Edinburgh and environs are the place for walking.
