Aberdeen Football Club’s Fantastic Fergie History

Aberdeen may not sound like an obvious holiday destination, but for fans of Scottish football manager Sir Alex Ferguson the city is a must see location.

That’s because Sir Alex, or ‘Fergie’ as he is more commonly known, was the manager of Aberdeen football club between 1978 and 1986. Aberdeen play at the Pittodrie Stadium and you can easily find an Aberdeen city centre hotel if you want to visit and need somewhere to stay.

With Sir Alex Ferguson as manager, Aberdeen football club (often nicknamed ‘The Dons’) enjoyed the most successful period in their history. When Fergie was boss the team won three league championships, four Scottish cups, one Drybrough cup, and one League cup.

Aberdeen even won the European Cup Winners Cup and the European Super Cup with Sir Alex leading the way! On 11 May 1983, Aberdeen beat Real Madrid 2-1 (after extra time) to clinch the European Cup Winners Cup. They were only the third Scottish side in history to win a European trophy.

Players such as Jim Leighton, Alex McLeish, and Gordon Strachan formed the backbone of the team and in December 1983 the Dons also beat Hamburger SV in the final of the European Super Cup. Under Sir Alex’s guidance, Aberdeen football club became one of the only teams to have ever successfully broken the traditional stranglehold of the two Glasgow old firm clubs Rangers and Celtic.

Rangers and Celtic have a very fierce rivalry which some say is the most deadly in football. When looking for a luxury hotel Glasgow has plenty of options, as there are many rich and powerful people that support one or other of the Old Firm clubs; I first heard of this rivalry while staying at a fancy Dunkeld hotel, which is a clear demonstration of how well known it is.

Sir Alex Ferguson actually played football for Rangers himself as a young man. He was a centre forward and loved scoring goals. Little did anyone know quite how successful his future career as a manager would be!
